The longest multipurpose bridge in Bangladesh is known as Padma Bridge. The Padma Bridge is the world’s 122nd longest bridge and the longest across the South Asian region. It was built with full domestic funding without foreign aid. China Major Bridge Engineering Construction Company started constructing the bridge on December 7, 2014, and finished in 2022. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated it on 25 June 2022.

This bridge has a total length of 6,150 meters and a width of 18.18 meters. The opening of this bridge has directly connected 19 districts in the southwestern region with the eastern portion of the country, including Dhaka, and the majority of the districts will be connected after the railway part is completed. Padma Bridge was initially estimated to cost 10 thousand 161 crores 75 Laketakene in 2007. However, due to design revisions, river management, and other technical issues, the cost was estimated to be around 30 thousand crores.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the bridge with a white pigeon on June 25, 2022. The steel truss bridge is 6.15 kilometers long and 18.10 meters broad.

On the top level, there is a four-lane roadway and a single-track railway. The bridge consists of 41 spans, with 42 supports set up to connect the two banks. Each span is 150 meters long and weighs 3140 tons. The bridge is mostly made of concrete and steel. 20,000 workers, including 2,000 foreigners, were involved in the construction. 19 districts of the southwestern region have been connected with the eastern portion of the country, including Dhaka. In the beginning, the cast was estimated at 10 thousand 161 crore 75 million takas.  But because of design changes, river management, and various technical complications, it cost almost US $3.868 billion.

Padma Bridge is the result of the combined efforts of the people and government of Bangladesh. It is a modern communication system messenger. The poverty rate of the southwestern region is higher than other regions. Farmers in n these areas don’t get a fair price for their crops due to expensive and time-consuming transportation systems. The Padma Bridge will reduce the poverty rate of these regions through fast transportation.
